Scary Big Chocolate Bars

Our first Challenger in our 3rd Annual Halloween Treat Challenge falls into the "Mass Produced" category but their offering is well beyond the bags of candy bars you'll find in most shops this season.  Praim Group retails and makes a lot of different brands but these bars are their own brand.  They have two Halloween designed boxes for their 3.5oz milk and dark chocolate bars: "Bone Appetit" and "R.I.P." they are called.

The "Bone Appetit" is the milk chocolate bar and the cover is a black and orange design with skull and what looks like crossbones but look closer; it is a fork and knife.  This bar has two servings so six pieces are a single serving.  Each of these has 270 calories made of 10 saturated fat, 10mg cholesterol, 38mg sodium, 1g fiber, 28g sugars, 3g protein, with some vitamins A and C with 10% calcium and half that in iron.  At 34% this may be a darker tasting milk chocolate than some of you are used to.  The entire bar measures 5.75 X 3.75 X0.75 inches; the same as the next bar we'll look at.  It has a chocolaty scent but I had to bring it fairly close to my nose to really appreciate it.  It took a bit of effort to snap off the first two pieces because it is so thick and when I did that the bar immediately started to melt in my grip because this has no preservatives.  It makes another soft snap when I take a bite and continues to make some sound for the first few chews.  The immediate flavor is a strong vanilla followed by chocolate then a creaminess fading back into chocolate.  That's good because it means our Sacred Substance wins out in the end but the bar takes us on a fair journey of flavors.  Letting it melt in your mouth increasing the creamy tastes as well as letting it coat your tongue.

The "R.I.P." bar is the dark version and it has grave stones, crosses, jack o'laterans and even a hand coming up from the grave.  RIP could stand for "rest in peace" but in this case it stands for "Rich. Intense. Pleasure." The bar itself is darker looking and has a much more intense chocolate scent compared to the milk chocolate version above. It is the same size as the previous bar but the nutritional information is a bit different.  1/2 this bar has 275 calories made of 10g saturated fat, 3mg cholesterol, 4mg sodium, 3g fiber, 25g sugars, 3g protein, with a bit of Vitamin A and Calcium but 14% of the daily iron an adult needs.  Even though this is just as thick, it is harder to break off some pieces to try and the sounds are a bit louder when I chew as well. However, without preservatives, it, too, starts to melt on my fingertips.  The first flavor is a light cocoa mixed with vanilla that almost immediately gets darker and darker, lingering on my tongue for about 20 seconds after I swallow my first bite.  Letting it melt in my mouth increases that intensity and I really like it a lot.

Both bars are wrapped in a 100% recycled paper internal wrapper and a light cardboard box on the outside; materials are 100% recyclable and the packing materials for the shipment I received was minimal which I like a lot.  Remember cacao trees grow only a very narrow band around the Earth so anything we can do to protect that band, like slow global warming or control deforrestation may help preserve chocolate, too, and help control the prices.  These bars are very reasonable priced for this size of 3.5oz.  You can find them in some stores but also order them online -- that has an email you can contact.

These might seem like big bars to be handing out to trick o' treaters but my grandmother always has later candy bars for her grandkids.  Think of these as special treats for the special kids and adults in your life.  Remember that our tastebuds change as we age so these are most likely to appeal to older kids and adults.  For the quality, the price, lack of artificial ingredients, and the packaging, these two Halloween bars from Praim this year get a thumbs as a great Sacrament choice for you all, Sisters and Brothers.
